Getting ready!

If it's springtime, it must be time to hit the road again.  We'll be exploring new territory on this trip to the Balkans, where our language skills will be beyond non-existent, despite Tom's efforts at mastering the Cyrillic alphabet.  Mel is going to go with her proven strategy of relying on the kindness of strangers and the knowledge that, if anyone has a second language, it will be English.  In that respect, the world makes it just too easy for us Yanks to be shamefully lazy.

But, I digress.  Because of the difficulty involved in taking rental cars across borders in Eastern Europe, and some advantageous French laws, we'll be leasing a car in Nice and driving straight across northern Italy at the start of our trip.  Then, it will be on to Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia over the course of a month.  Our itinerary includes national parks, the beautiful Adriatic Coast, Roman ruins, medieval walled cities, rural countryside and mountains, capital cities, monasteries, and sites still bearing the scars of recent conflicts.

We're looking forward to seeing it all, soaking up the food and drink and, as always, learning a great deal about the fascinating world in which we live.  Pack your bags, hold the mail, and please join us again!
